ALMOND KERNELS

Nonpareil is the most widely grown and most premium almond variety. Its thin outer skin and smooth, light-coloured surface make it the first choice for blanching, slicing and snacking.

California type covers varieties such as Carmel, Monterey and Butte. They are versatile, slightly darker kernels, well suited to roasting, flavouring and manufacturing.

  • Vitamin E. One handful gives half the daily value of this antioxidant vitamin.
  • Heart health. Mostly unsaturated fat, linked to healthy cholesterol levels.
  • Blood sugar. Low in carbohydrates and rich in magnesium.

Almonds and skin health

A 16-week randomised controlled pilot study at the University of California, Davis, funded by the Almond Board of California, followed 28 healthy postmenopausal women. Half ate about two handfuls of almonds (around 60 g) a day as a snack; the other half ate a nut-free snack with the same calories.

The almond group showed a statistically significant reduction in wrinkle width and wrinkle severity. A 60 g serving also provides 12 g of plant protein, 7 g of fibre and 100% of the daily value for vitamin E.
